Need for Communication Therapy Groups
Aphasia, dyspraxia and dysarthria are communication difficulties caused by brain damage following a stroke or brain injury. These can impact a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, and write.
This therapy group provides a space for individuals with communication difficulties to:
Practice communication skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Gain access to resources and information about aphasia.
Connect with others who share similar challenges.
Reduce feelings of isolation and improve overall well-being.
Program Details
Led by a qualified Specialist Speech & Language Therapist. Catherine provides expertise in communication difficulties and ensures the group sessions are structured and beneficial for participants. The topics and activities included are participant-led.
Focused on the promotion of supported communication. Supported communication is the multi-modal communication approach, using a variety of communication methods beyond the spoken word, such as gesture, pictures, drawing and writing keywords.
Open to individuals at all stages of their journey. Catherine will understand the needs of each participant and provide the support required for each person to participate.
Held regularly. Frequency (e.g. monthy, bi-weekly) is determined by funding and participant needs. The sessions are 1.5hrs long, which reflects the time required for the facilitation of effective communication for those with aphasia or communication difficulties.
Restricted to no more than 8 participants per session (and their communication partners) to ensure each person has the opportunity to participate fully and has the support required with reduced distractions.

Supported communication education. Catherine will support communication partners (caregivers, family members) enhance their understanding of communication difficulties and effective communication strategies.
